Former Athlete Society Accountability Call: Flexibility, Boring Workouts, Productivity, Accountability & Training Tweaks
This week’s Accountability Call dives into training flexibility, the value of boring workouts, a stopwatch hack for productivity, why public accountability matters, and a new spin on DC Training. Progress isn’t about perfection — it’s about consistency, balance, and staying accountable.

Welcome back to the Former Athlete Society Accountability Call — a space where we get real about training, mindset, and life outside of the competition spotlight. This week, I’m diving into five topics that every former athlete (myself included) wrestles with: training flexibility, the grind of boring workouts, productivity hacks, the power of public accountability, and advanced training splits.
Before you scroll further, make sure to watch the video below where I break down each one in detail. Then, dig into the insights and lessons written out here — they’ll give you context, examples, and strategies you can apply immediately.

What You’ll Learn in This Call
💡 Flexibility in Training & Family Enrichment
Taking a day off doesn’t make you a failure. This week, I skipped training for a full day in the Colorado mountains with my family. That day gave me more than a workout ever could: deeper connection, recharged motivation, and perspective.
For most of us, training isn’t tied to a stage or hard deadline. We can pivot, reallocate, and return the next week refreshed. Being flexible with training timelines isn’t a weakness — it’s wisdom. And often, your relationships and long-term consistency will thank you for it.
🔥 Embracing the Boring
Progress doesn’t always look exciting. In fact, the best training is often repetitive, mundane, and — let’s be honest — boring. These sessions build unseen foundations. They don’t give you instant highlights but they pay massive dividends over time.
Zoom out. Look at weeks or months instead of single workouts. That’s when you’ll realize the boring days are the ones stacking your future results. Embracing the boring isn’t just about grit — it’s about trusting the process.
⏱ The Apple Watch Stopwatch
One of my simplest productivity hacks is front and center on my Apple Watch: a stopwatch. I use it for coaching sessions, but also for life outside the gym. From cooking to homework time with my kids, timing tasks keeps me sharp and prevents wasted hours.
This is about reclaiming your time. Small changes in awareness create huge shifts in productivity. If you’ve been feeling like your days are slipping away, try this — you’ll be surprised how much control you regain.
🛡 Public Accountability Creates Stakes
When you declare your goals publicly, you create stakes. Now others know, and their eyes are on you. That social contract can be one of the most powerful motivators available.
It’s easy to let yourself down. It’s harder to let others down. That’s why accountability systems — teammates, family, or even just a post declaring your goal — can keep you locked in. If you’re serious about progress, don’t keep your goals in the dark.
🏋️ DC Training with a Twist
Dante Trudel’s DC Training has been a staple for me: upper/lower splits, three days a week. But in my next phase, I’m testing a twist — bumping it to four days (Mon/Tue, Thu/Fri) with the same split. It’s one extra day, one more opportunity for growth.
But more frequency means more stress. Recovery becomes non-negotiable, and nutrition must support the workload. It’s an experiment in balance: can I push growth without tipping over into burnout? Time will tell, and that’s the fun of training evolution.
Who this helps: former athletes who want the structure back without living in the weight room, coaches who coach all day and still need their own training, and anyone who prefers simple systems over hype. If you try one thing, try the 45-minute morning this week and TUT on your low-energy days—you’ll feel the difference fast.
If this helps, hammer the like, share with a teammate who used to grind next to you, and tell me which system you’re going to run first.
