Masterclass for Former Athletes: Fueling, Training, Mindset & Recovery Essentials

In this 40-minute masterclass, I’m diving deep into the key pillars every former athlete needs to know to stay healthy, perform well, and keep building the athletic body you want after your playing days are over.

I exclusively cover:
🍗 Fueling & Nutrition: Why protein matters more than ever and how to structure your meals to support your goals.
🧠 Applied Sport Psychology: Exploring Growth Mindset, based on Carol Dweck’s work, and how it applies to training and life after sport.
😴 Recovery: The critical role of sleep in performance and body composition, plus which recovery tools are backed by science, and which ones aren’t.
🏋️‍♂️ Training & Monitoring: Understanding the difference between peak power and relative peak power, and why both metrics matter when monitoring performance and progression.

This session is packed with actionable insights for any former athlete who’s serious about leveling up their training, nutrition, and mindset.

Fueling: Protein Is The Priority

After your playing days, your margin for error shrinks. You are moving less, recovering slower, and losing muscle faster than you did at twenty-two. Protein is the lever that matters most.

Anchor every meal with a palm-and-a-half of protein. For most former athletes, that lands around 0.8 to 1 gram per pound of bodyweight per day. Spread it across three to four meals, because your body builds muscle in response to each feeding, not just the daily total. This is not complicated. It is just consistent.

Training: Know Your Numbers

You do not need a sport science department to train intelligently. You need two numbers and the discipline to track them.

Peak power tells you your absolute ceiling. Relative peak power, power divided by bodyweight, tells you how well you move yourself. As a former athlete, the second number is the one that predicts how you feel on the stairs, on the field with your kids, and in year ten of training. Chase clarity, not complexity: pick a jump or a lift you can test monthly, record the number, and make sure the trend points the right way.

Mindset: Growth Over Fixed

Carol Dweck's research draws a line between two mindsets. The fixed mindset says your abilities are set, so every setback is a verdict. The growth mindset says abilities are built, so every setback is data.

Former athletes live this distinction daily. The fixed mindset says, "I used to squat 400, now I can barely move, why bother." The growth mindset says, "I am building a new base from here." Same body. Different story. Different outcome. I am not impressed by amazing increases of physical strength. I am concerned and impressed by the increases of mental strength, and it starts with the story you tell yourself about where you are.

If I could only give a former athlete one recovery tool, it would not be a tool at all. It would be eight hours in a cool, dark room.

Sleep is when your body does its repair work: hormones release, tissues rebuild, the brain files away motor learning. Most recovery gadgets are trying to do a fraction of what sleep does for free. Back your sleep with the fundamentals, consistent schedule, no screens in the last hour, cool room, and then treat the tools as the five percent, not the fifty.

The full masterclass walks through each pillar with the detail it deserves. If you are serious about training like an athlete for life, this is your curriculum.
