Best Thing goes out to our Colorado Volleyball team traveling to Waco, Texas to take on the first two rounds of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. I've been preparing an article for my website discussing the matter in greater detail but I absolutely love traveling with our teams. For the coaches who already know the demands of traveling with your sport teams, I won't bore you (you can skip down the list). For those that don't, it's one of the handful of great opportunities to really connect with the student-athletes you work with. I'll keep you all posted once it's published.
Favorite Read of the week goes to Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic's article in the Harvard Business Review called "How to Tell Leaders They’re Not as Great as They Think They Are". This was such a great read because it addresses a lot of the common problems that we have as leaders. In addition, it identifies one of the many challenges we typically approach and offers recommendations for hedging the confidence and drive that we naturally have as leaders with a humbleness and self-effacing, self-critical openness we often need.
Currently Listening to Kevin Rose's podcast with Andreas Antonopoulos discussing cryptocurrency and distributed open protocols of currency. Andreas Antonopoulos is also the author of several books including "Mastering Bitcoin". If you have an introductory understanding of bitcoin (which reached $10,000/Ƀ valuation this week), you'd want to listen to this show. It was fascinating! If you've been curious about why cryptocurrency is a growing commodity, and how someday this may reach a market infiltration tipping point - this may a great podcast for you.
Great Purchase of the Week goes to Kitchen Safe's kSafe. At this point, you are no stranger to the fact that I attempt to create as much white-space as I possibly can in order to deeply connect with my friends and family. One of the tools I utilize is the Kitchen Safe kSafe. The kSafe allows you to lock anything up in a small Tupperware-like container (they come in three sizes, I recommend the Mini) for any duration of time you input. There are no overrides to the box. When enabled, if you put something in the container, the only way to retrieve it is to break the box open or wait the duration of the time limit.
When I arrive home from coaching all day, I toss my phone into the box (automatically preset for 3 hours). The three-hour time limit allows me enough time to not be distracted by work or my phone while I reconnect with my family after a long day away from them. It also is a small enough time that allows for me to retrieve my phone by the time my wife and I go to bed. It's a great tool for those wanting to create a small amount of white space in their world.
